Preventative Screenings: What Tests to Get and When to Get Them
Published: 03-28-2025 | 2 MIN READ | Author: Jennifer Klein
Your health is your most valuable asset, and preventative screenings are key to maintaining it. Early detection can save lives, prevent complications, and often lead to simpler, less costly treatments. Yet, many people don’t know which tests they need or when they should get them. At Prism Health North Texas (PHNTX), we offer comprehensive primary medical care services, including preventative screenings tailored to meet your unique health needs.
Here’s a quick guide to the most common screenings and when to schedule them:
Annual Wellness Exam
Start with a yearly wellness visit. This check-up helps establish a baseline for your health, allows your provider to track any changes over time, and includes routine measurements like blood pressure, weight, and heart rate. Your provider may also discuss lifestyle factors, mental health, and risk factors for chronic conditions.
Blood Pressure Screening
Frequency: Every 2 years for adults with normal blood pressure (less than 120/80 mmHg). Annual screenings are recommended if you’re at increased risk for hypertension.
High blood pressure often has no symptoms but can lead to heart disease or stroke if left untreated. Early detection is critical, and at PHNTX, we provide personalized care plans for managing hypertension.
Cholesterol Screening
Frequency: Every 4-6 years starting at age 20. More frequent screenings may be needed if you have risk factors like diabetes or a family history of heart disease.
A simple blood test checks your cholesterol levels, helping assess your risk for heart disease and stroke.
Diabetes Screening
Frequency: Every 3 years starting at age 35, or earlier and more frequently if you’re overweight or have additional risk factors.
An HbA1c test can detect prediabetes and diabetes, allowing you to make lifestyle changes or begin treatment early.
Cancer Screenings
Provider recommended: There are screenings available for many types of cancer, including breast, cervical, anal, colon, and lung. Your healthcare provider will discuss when to begin screening and how often you should be screened based on your personal and family medical history. At PHNTX, we will work with you to address your prevention and health maintenance needs and help identify community resources for accessing services if you don’t have health insurance.
STI Screenings
Frequency: At least once a year for sexually active individuals, or more frequently depending on your risk factors.
PHNTX specializes in sexual health care, offering confidential, judgment-free STI testing and treatment for people of all backgrounds.
Bone Density Screening
Frequency: Once every 10 years starting at age 65 for women and age 70 for men, or earlier if you have risk factors for osteoporosis.
This test assesses your risk for fractures and bone loss.
Vaccinations
Stay up to date on vaccines like the flu shot (annually), COVID-19 boosters, and tetanus shots (every 10 years). Your healthcare provider may recommend additional vaccines based on your age, lifestyle, or travel plans.
