Volunteer Highlight: Meet Victor

Growing up in Mexico, Victor never did much volunteering. He was too busy getting his bachelors in accounting, working at a large hotel in Queretaro, and managing his HIV diagnosis. The culture shock he experienced when he moved to the United States extended beyond weather, language, food and politics. He was introduced to an American emphasis on the importance of volunteerism.

At first, Victor volunteered at a local Dallas medical clinic translating for their Spanish speaking patients. However, shortly thereafter, he found himself wanting to give back to his own community- the HIV+ and LGBT community. Victor had transitioned into care at Prism Health North Texas at the recommendation of his previous Case Manager, and was in awe of the support he had been receiving. According to Victor, the way his provider looks at him is “so kind- it’s like visiting family”. And his case manager? His case manager is so kind he even came to Victor’s wedding!

“Prism Health North Texas has been a lifesaver for me since I came to Dallas- always taking care of me in the most difficult moments” exclaims Victor. Because of this, he wants to give back and help out as much as he can in return. For almost a year now, he has been a steadfast volunteer for the agency. He has put together snack packs, organized the community closet, helped out at LifeWalk and much more. Sometimes “the tasks seem not to be so important,” says Victor, “but I know it’s for something much bigger- it’s literally saving lives”.

Victor’s generous spirit stretches past the walls of Prism Health North Texas. He also donates his time to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Literacy Achieves, and Cathedral of Hope. It is with the help of people like him that we are able to advance the health of our community. Victor is “so very thankful” for Prism Health North Texas, and that feeling is most emphatically mutual.
